The former Brazilian leader has been detained after authorities concluded he posed a definite escape threat while under home confinement.
The former head of state was found guilty of plotting a military coup in last fall and given more than over two decades in incarceration, but he continued under house arrest pending legal challenges.
Top Judicial Official Alexandre de Moraes said the decision to arrest the elderly politician was a safety action after fresh information emerged.
This encompassed seeking to disable his electronic bracelet and a call for a demonstration that could enable a potential flight.
In a document approving the detention, the magistrate said data from the facility tracking Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the ex-president's plan to remove the electronic ankle bracelet to ensure success in his getaway".
This, it said, would be assisted by the chaos caused by the protest called by his offspring.
His son, Flávio Bolsonaro, who holds office as a legislator, called for a meeting of his supporters near the former president's residence to take place on Saturday night.
Flávio Bolsonaro wrote on digital networks on the previous day: "Are you going to fight for your country, or see it all from your mobile device there on your sofa? I invite you to fight with us."
He said the vigil would be so supporters could "pray for his well-being and for the restoration of democratic rule in our land."
Part of Justice Moraes's decision was the possibility of the former president's move to embassies near the dwelling, considering that the inquiries revealed a history of organizing to seek refuge through a diplomatic representation", a declaration said.
The court filing emphasizes that the United States embassy in the federal district, the capital city, is located around approximately 13 kilometers from Bolsonaro's home.
Bolsonaro's legal woes have provoked anger from fellow right-wing populist United States President President Trump, prompting him to enact a half-rate duty on Brazilian product imports.
Bolsonaro is being kept in a Federal Police station in the capital and will have a custody hearing on the following day.
It was only on Friday that the ex-leader's attorneys asked the Top Court to authorize him to complete his entire prison term under home confinement, with digital surveillance.
They also requested that he be authorized to leave his home for healthcare, saying he needed frequent medical attention for pulmonary infections and other ailments.
He was determined responsible of leading a plot aimed at retaining his authority after he lost the presidential race to his political opponent, Lula.
Supreme Court justices said that he had knowledge of a scheme which involved plans to assassinate Lula and his running partner, Geraldo Alckmin, and to detain and kill Alexandre de Moraes - the Supreme Court justice who has been presiding over Bolsonaro's trial.
The conspiracy was stopped because it failed to get the backing of the armed forces officials. Lula was sworn in without problem on the first day of 2023.
But a following week, on January 8th, numerous Bolsonaro supporters attacked and damaged government buildings in the capital, the capital city.
The security forces stepped in and around fifteen hundred individuals were taken into custody.
The magistrates found that the rioters had been provoked by Bolsonaro whose strategy, they said, was for the Brazilian military to intervene, restore order and return him to office.
