Wimbledon Adopts Video Challenge System This Season.

Wimbledon tennis court with replay technology

The tournament joins the American and Aussie Opens in implementing video review systems.

Video review systems will make its debut at Wimbledon this year.

Athletes will gain the option to contest certain calls made by the official, mirroring the system already in operation at both the US Open and the Australian Open.

This technology will be accessible on Centre Court and the number one court for the duration of the tournament and on the remaining featured courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This step arrives only a year after the AELTC implemented ELC, which brought an end to the centuries-old role of line judges.

Reviewable Decisions

Players cannot to challenge the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but they can ask for the official to re-examine specific decisions, such as:

  • Whether a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a ball made contact with an rival's racket or body on the way past.
  • Possible interference end of a rally.

Importantly, there is an unlimited number on the amount of challenges a player can request.

Case in Point

A recent example took place in a recent tournament recently, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the review system against his opponent.

The British player conceded it was a difficult call for the official, but thought his rival had "played the rules quite well."

The umpire viewed a video and ruled the player was guilty of hindrance, granting the point to Medvedev.

Broader Adoption

Video reviews aren't exclusive to Grand Slams. The system has been in use at the US Open for two years and the Aussie Open this year.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by next season the ATP circuit plans to have video reviews implemented at all of its events.

Additional Innovations

Another change at Wimbledon this year will be the introduction of visual indicators on scoreboards to complement the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses situations where fans have occasionally been uncertain if a shot was in or out.

In other news, with exactly a century of days to go until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have further revealed an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
